Windshear Inc
As the first 100% commercial full scale rolling road wind tunnel, Windshear Inc. understands the necessity of staying at the leading edge of the science and technology of experimental aerodynamics. As the Concord, North Carolina company heads into the third year of operation, customer demand for its highly accurate aerodynamic simulation is stronger than ever. In addition to customers from just about every professional motorsports genre, Windshear has begun to provide it’s premium test services to automobile manufacturers looking to break new ground in the quest for improved fuel economy.
At Windshear, vehicles are placed on the rolling road and tested at speeds up to 180 miles per hour and yaw angles up to ±8 degrees. Windshear’s main fan consists of 29 carbon-fiber blades reaching 22 feet in diameter and is powered by a 5,300 horsepower electric motor. The system can accelerate from 0 to 180 miles per hour in less than a minute. Another technical feature of Windshear is an integrated temperature stability system, which can control air temperature to standard day conditions, plus or minus 1º degree F. The high-tech rolling road is 10.5 feet wide by 29.5 feet long, easily accommodating a wide range to test vehicles. During testing, “through-the-belt” sensors measure the aerodynamic down force under each tire, while biaxial load cells integrated into the restraint system register the aerodynamic drag and side force. Recently, Windshear has launched yet another high tech enhancement for customers, as it implements a proprietary wheel force measurement system to accurately measure tire contact patch forces on the rolling road belt. The technology available at Windshear is the successful marriage of the latest state-of-the-art open-jet wind tunnel design from Jacobs Technology with the latest developments in wide-belt rolling road systems. All of this combines, to make Windshear THE source for highly accurate, repeatable aerodynamic data, to gain a competitive advantage on the race track or in the global marketplace.
To ensure absolute confidentiality with all of its clients, Windshear maintains a high standard of security. All test data files are erased from Windshear servers once a customer’s testing is complete and the facility is physically configured so that no two customer will see each other’s vehicles at any time. Also, all Windshear employees and contractors sign non-disclosure agreements and are bound by strict privacy guidelines. Card keys are issued to all customers, limiting areas and times of access, and unauthorized personnel are prohibited from customer areas.

Windshear is conveniently located next to the Concord Regional Airport (25 miles northeast of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport) at 1050 Ivey Cline Rd, Concord, NC 28027.
