Aircraft Research Association (ARA)
ARA is Europe’s leading independent aerodynamic research and development company, attracting business from a worldwide customer base. Founded in 1952, ARA is recognised worldwide as a Centre of Excellence in aerodynamic research and design. The company offers the unique combination of the following complementary services:
• Computational Aerodynamics
• Experimental Aerodynamics/Wind Tunnel Testing
• Model Design and Manufacture
Computational Aerodynamics
The Computational Aerodynamics department was established in the mid-1970s and has since been at the forefront of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code development and application within the United Kingdom, initially for the Ministry of Defence and more recently companies such as Airbus, BAESystems and MBDA. Many of the codes and processes developed by ARA have a wide range of application outside the aerospace industry.
• World leading CFD meshing capability
• CFD process development and tool integration
• Aerodynamic design, analysis and performance data
• Open rotor design and analysis
• Aeroacoustics and noise prediction
• Motorsport
• Renewable energy
• Sports equipment
Experimental Aerodynamics
The 9ft x 8ft Transonic Wind Tunnel is one of the world’s leading large high speed wind tunnels, renowned for both high productivity and data quality. The tunnel is used by many of the world’s leading civil and defence aerospace companies and also government agencies for the development and upgrade of aircraft and defence systems and for aerodynamic research.
• Full and half span models
• Drag performance and stability and control data
• Isolated and installed propulsion system performance
• Propeller performance and acoustic measurements
• Weapon carriage and release testing
• Pressure Sensitive Paint
• Oilflow visualisation
• Data acquisition systems
Design and Manufacture
ARA designs and manufactures models and test rigs for the ARA tunnels and other wind tunnels across the world. ARA is renowned for the high quality, geometrically accurate models required for the precise measurement of aerodynamic data demanded by aircraft and defence system manufacturers.
• Large scale low speed, high speed and cryogenic models
• Small supersonic models
• Test rigs and model support systems
• Propulsion systems
• Strain gauge balance design, manufacture, gauging and calibrationThe Design and Manufacture and Experimental Aerodynamics departments work closely together during the model design and manufacture phase to help minimise wind tunnel rigging times and provide high quality customer service from design concept to delivery of wind tunnel data.
This combination of services enables ARA to provide specialist input to civil and military aerospace projects from the early design concept stage, through to upgrades of an in-service capability. ARA has worked on many ground-breaking projects for the world's major aerospace manufacturers and our customers can be assured of continued high quality services with the new technologies which are delivered through our Innovation and Technology programme.
